President Bassirou Faye of Senegal has dissolved the National Assembly and scheduled new legislative elections for November 17.

In a national address, Faye confirmed that he made the decision after consultations with key officials, including the prime minister and the president of the National Assembly.

Despite winning the presidency in March with 54.28% of the vote, Faye’s African Patriots of Senegal for Work, Ethics, and Fraternity party holds a minority in the National Assembly.

The outgoing president Macky Sall’s coalition retains control of the majority of the 165 seats.

Faye noted that the National Assembly had used its majority to hinder his administration’s policies, leading to the dissolution and upcoming elections.
