Sociedad, Celta set eyes on Maja
Nigerian forward Josh Maja has caught the attention of La Liga sides Real Sociedad and Celta Vigo, setting the stage for a potential January transfer battle.
According to Super Deporte, Sociedad is prepared to challenge Celta Vigo for the West Bromwich Albion striker, who has been in stellar form under Carlos Corberán this season.
Celta Vigo, nicknamed the Sky Blues, have reportedly been tracking the 25-year-old for an extended period and are considered frontrunners for his signature. However, Sociedad’s growing interest could escalate competition for the in-demand forward.
Reports suggest Celta are ready to meet West Brom’s £16 million valuation of the player, who has been pivotal for his Championship side this season.
Maja has netted nine goals and provided one assist in 15 appearances, including scoring in back-to-back games before the international break.
Having previously showcased his talent at Bordeaux, Maja’s recent form has revived his profile, making him a prime target for both La Liga clubs looking to bolster their attacking options.
He scored a crucial goal in the 1-1 draw against Luton Town, followed by the winner in the 2-1 victory over Hull City, ending West Brom’s eight-match winless run.
Having played in the French League and in England, Maja could be tempted by a move to Spain where there are Nigerian players.
Kelechi Iheanacho and Chidera Ejuke joined Sevilla during the summer transfer window while Sadiq Umar plies his trade with Sociedad.
While he remains pivotal to West Brom’s promotion hopes, the potential £16m windfall might be difficult for the Championship side to reject.
Despite his club form, Maja has been overlooked by Nigeria’s head coach Augustine Eguavoen for the Super Eagles’ recent Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
The forward has not represented his country since his 2019 debut against Ukraine, a puzzling decision given his resurgence.
