Sporting Lisbon appoints Joao Pereira as head coach
Sporting Lisbon has announced the appointment of Joao Pereira as the new head coach, following Ruben Amorim’s departure to join Manchester United.
Pereira, 40, will step up from his position as reserve-team manager to lead the Portuguese champions.
The announcement came a day after Sporting’s impressive comeback victory over Braga, where they overturned a two-goal deficit to win 4-2, keeping their perfect Primeira Liga record intact. The match marked a memorable farewell for Amorim, who has enjoyed a highly successful tenure at Sporting.
Amorim’s move to Old Trafford comes after the sacking of Erik ten Hag. During his time at Sporting, Amorim won the club’s first league title in 19 years in 2021 and secured another championship last season. Under his leadership, Sporting has remained competitive on the European stage, most recently defeating Manchester City 4-1 in the Champions League.
Pereira, a former Portugal right-back with three stints as a Sporting player, will address the media in his first press conference as head coach later today, the club confirmed via social media.
