Nigerian celebrities made a strong impression at the 2025 Met Gala, captivating the global stage with bold, culturally inspired fashion statements that celebrated African heritage.

The prestigious event took place at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City and attracted some of Nigeria’s most prominent figures, including music stars Burna Boy, Tems, and Ayra Starr, acclaimed author Chimamanda Adichie, and popular fashion stylist Swanky Jerry.

This year’s event was themed ‘Superfine: Tailoring Black Style,’ challenging attendees to deliver refined expressions of Black identity and culture through precise tailoring and personal creativity — a challenge the Nigerian delegation embraced with confidence.

Tems, whose full name is Temilade Openiyi, turned heads in a stunning custom-made outfit that fused traditional Aso-Ebi fabrics with modern haute couture designs. Her appearance received widespread admiration for perfectly balancing African tradition with contemporary fashion.

Grammy Award-winning artiste Burna Boy, also known as Damini Ogulu, stepped out in a sophisticated ensemble designed by Ghanaian-British designer Ozwald Boateng. Describing the outfit as “specially made,” Burna Boy’s attire stood out for its refined craftsmanship. A viral video from the night showed him celebrating alongside UK rapper Central Cee.

Afrobeats star Ayra Starr infused her trademark “sabi girl” energy into the evening with a bold, floor-length gown that was both daring and minimalistic, highlighting her youthful personality and fearless style.

Renowned Nigerian author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie also made a striking appearance in a powerful red gown that matched her elegance and literary stature. She served as a member of the Met Gala’s 2025 Costume Institute Benefit host committee, alongside other notable names like Usher, Tyla, Dapper Dan, Ayo Edebiri, and Doechii.

Celebrity stylist Jeremiah Ogbodo, popularly known as Swanky Jerry, made a fashion statement in a dramatic outfit by Nigerian designers Deji and Kola. Sharing his look on social media, he captioned: “On duty for Met Gala 2025, superfine. Tailoring Black style. When the theme calls for legacy, I deliver. Heritage in every stitch. Legacy in every look. Style crafted. Culture honoured.”

American-Nigerian actress Ayo Edebiri was also praised for her look, which incorporated subtle references to Benin heritage while maintaining a modern, global fashion sensibility. Her hairstyle and outfit gracefully bridged African tradition with international style.

The Met Gala, traditionally held on the first Monday of May, remains fashion’s most exclusive event, raising funds for the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute. Since 1995, the event has been directed by Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour, maintaining its global influence and prestige.
