The Edo Governorship Election Petition Tribunal commenced today in Benin City, setting the stage for a heated legal battle between the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the All Progressives Congress (APC) over the outcome of the September 21 gubernatorial election.

The proceedings have sparked mixed reactions, with optimism among PDP supporters and palpable unease within APC ranks.

PDP Challenges Election Results

The PDP’s candidate, Asue Ighodalo, is contesting the election results announced by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), alleging widespread irregularities. The party accuses the APC and INEC of collusion, citing inflated APC votes in key strongholds, non-compliance with the Electoral Act, and unlawful cancellations of PDP votes in critical local government areas.

Speaking on the matter, PDP spokesperson Barrister Tony Ehilebo expressed confidence in their case. “We have overwhelming evidence to show the election was rigged. We trust the tribunal will restore the stolen mandate and uphold the integrity of our democracy,” Ehilebo stated.

APC Denies Allegations

The APC has dismissed the PDP’s claims as unfounded. Chief Alex Okosun, an APC chieftain, criticized the legal challenge as unnecessary, urging Ighodalo to accept the results.

“We must move beyond litigating every election. Asue should support Governor Monday Okpebholo to develop Edo State.

For the first time, we have an Esan governor, and that is what matters most,” Okosun said, maintaining confidence in the governor’s mandate.

Governor Okpebholo’s Controversial Tenure

Governor Monday Okpebholo’s administration has faced criticism since his swearing-in, with allegations of poor governance and controversial decisions. His handling of the state budget, attempts to suspend local government chairmen, and defiance of Supreme Court rulings on local government autonomy have fueled dissatisfaction among opposition parties and civil society groups.

A Litmus Test for Nigeria’s Judiciary

As the tribunal begins its proceedings, attention is focused on whether it will uphold Okpebholo’s contested victory or rule in favor of the PDP’s challenge.

For many, the case represents a critical test of Nigeria’s judiciary and its commitment to ensuring electoral transparency and justice.

The tribunal’s decision is eagerly awaited, as it could have significant implications for Edo State’s political landscape and the broader democratic process in Nigeria.
