Tension in Abia community as gunmen kill alleged informant, residents flee
Unknown gunmen have struck again in Umuchima village, Isiala Ngwa North LGA of Abia State, killing a local resident accused of providing information to the Nigerian Army.
This attack follows a recent operation by the military’s Joint Task Force, Operation Udo Ka, which dismantled a suspected gunmen camp in the community.
The killing has triggered panic, prompting several residents to flee to nearby villages. Speaking anonymously, a fleeing villager described the attack as a “commando-style” operation, expressing fears of being caught in future violence.
Earlier in the week, the Nigerian Army’s 14 Brigade engaged in a clash with gunmen in the area. Heavily armed troops in over 15 Hilux vehicles and armored carriers reportedly stormed the village, targeting a suspected hideout near a river that borders Abia and Imo states.
The Abia State Government has reiterated its commitment to flushing out criminal elements terrorizing the region, as security forces intensify efforts to restore peace and order.
