President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is set to approve the appointment of 11 directors for the newly established North-West Development Commission (NWDC), with the nominees including relatives of influential politicians.
The nominations were confirmed in a letter jointly signed by Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Tajudeen Abbas, and Deputy Senate President, Senator Barau I. Jibrin, addressed to President Tinubu for final approval.
Among the most notable appointees is Asiya Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, daughter of APC National Chairman and former Kano State Governor Abdullahi Ganduje, who has been nominated as Director of Community and Rural Development. Also on the list is the son of Senator Aliyu Wamakko, former Governor of Sokoto State, who has been nominated as Director of Planning, Research, Statistics, and Management Information Systems.
The NWDC is expected to play a crucial role in driving infrastructure, economic growth, and governance in the North-West region. However, the nominations have raised concerns over political favoritism, with critics questioning whether the selection process prioritized merit over political connections.
Despite the controversy, the appointments are expected to enhance governance and economic development in the North-West, although debates over fairness and transparency are likely to follow.
