The Ogun State Police Command has initiated an investigation and search operation following the tragic drowning of 19-year-old Oluwaferanmi Olasupo at an abandoned quarry pool near Eseke Village, Odeda.

According to a statement released by the command’s spokesperson, CSP Omolola Odutola, on Saturday, the unfortunate incident occurred on Friday when Olasupo, reportedly an inexperienced swimmer, visited the quarry site with friends for recreational purposes. Sadly, he drowned during the outing.

His grandfather, Olaseinde Sunday, was said to have reported the incident to the police at about 6:39 pm on Friday after being informed by villagers.

She said, “Immediately, the Divisional Police Officer received the report, he detailed his detectives to swiftly mobilise to the scene to rescue the victim.

“However, due to poor visibility, as night fell, rescue efforts were postponed. Local divers have been contacted to assist in retrieving the body, and the search will resume at dawn.

Meanwhile, the victim’s friends, who were present at the scene were said to have taken to their heels and are currently in hiding.

The police have however instructed the parents of the fleeing friends of Olasupo to produce them for questioning as part of the ongoing investigation.

Odutola said that further updates on the search efforts will be communicated as more information becomes available.
