Trump signals early neeting with Putin post-inauguration
U.S. President-elect Donald Trump has expressed his intention to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin shortly after his inauguration on January 20.
Trump disclosed his plans during an interview with Newsmax, stating, “I know he [Putin] wants to meet, and I’m going to meet him very quickly. I would have done it sooner, but you have to get into the office. For some of the things, you do have to be there.”
Earlier in January, Trump had refrained from committing to a specific timeline for the meeting, emphasizing that it would not happen before he officially assumes office.
Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov confirmed the potential for dialogue, stating on Monday that while no formal arrangements have been made, both leaders have shown a mutual political will to engage. “Such discussions would be very, very necessary and advisable,” Peskov added.
Additionally, Mike Waltz, Trump’s National Security Advisor Designate, hinted that the two leaders might schedule a phone call in the near future to set the stage for their meeting.
The presidential election held on November 5, 2024, saw Trump, the Republican candidate and former president (2017–2021), secure victory over Democratic candidate Kamala Harris, who conceded the race. The Electoral College finalized Trump’s win on December 17, 2024, and Congress certified the results on January 6.
Trump’s inauguration is slated for January 20, marking the start of his second term.
