Two-storey building collapses in Umuahia, no casualties reported
A two-storey building under construction in Amangwu Ohokobe Ndume, Umuahia North LGA of Abia State, collapsed on Saturday evening.
Fortunately, no workers were present at the site when the structure caved in, preventing any casualties.
The building, which had just been roofed, collapsed unexpectedly. While the exact cause has yet to be officially determined, local residents suspect the use of substandard materials and poor supervision during the construction process.
According to residents, workers were scheduled to begin work on the building’s interior soon after the roofing was completed. However, a postponement in the start date proved to be a fortunate turn of events, as the workers were not on-site when the collapse occurred.
Nkechi, a resident of Ohokobe, expressed relief, stating, “The postponement was the saving grace for the workers because if they were at work when the house collapsed, who knows what would have happened to them?”
Reports indicate that the site engineer has gone into hiding following the incident. This collapse comes just months after a similar incident in June, where a three-storey building under construction in Obingwu, Ukwa West LGA, collapsed, killing five site workers.
