Manchester United edged closer to securing a direct spot in the Europa League last 16 after Bruno Fernandes’ stoppage-time winner sealed a 2-1 victory over Rangers in Thursday’s dramatic clash at Old Trafford.

The match seemed destined for a draw when Cyriel Dessers equalized for an injury-hit Rangers in the 88th minute. However, Fernandes’ decisive strike spared United from further frustration and kept them on course to avoid the playoff round.

The Red Devils now sit fourth in the group standings with one game remaining, while Rangers dropped to 13th, making their chances of reaching the top eight and earning direct qualification slim.

Injury-Hit Rangers Impress Despite Defeat

Rangers, plagued by injuries, put up a spirited fight under manager Philippe Clement, who had to rely on two inexperienced 18-year-olds, Bailey Rice and Findlay Curtis, in the second half. Despite the setbacks, they came close to earning a point and remain in contention for the playoff round with a crucial home game against Union Saint-Gilloise next week.

Garnacho and VAR Drama

United had their share of missed opportunities, with Alejandro Garnacho firing off the post and Matthijs de Ligt’s header controversially ruled out for a foul during a corner. Garnacho, linked with a potential transfer to Napoli or Chelsea, failed to make his mark in what could be his final game for the club.

Amad Diallo Faces Former Club

Amad Diallo, who once spent an underwhelming loan spell at United, posed a threat for Rangers but was largely contained. However, his corner led to Jack Butland’s own goal, giving Rangers a brief glimmer of hope.

Fernandes to the Rescue

After Dessers capitalized on Harry Maguire’s defensive lapse to equalize, Fernandes delivered the winning blow, slotting Lisandro Martinez’s cross through Butland’s legs in the dying moments.

What’s Next?

United will travel to Romania to face FCSB, needing just a point to guarantee a last-16 spot. Meanwhile, Rangers must defeat Union Saint-Gilloise at Ibrox to keep their slim hopes of direct qualification alive.
