UNICAL Engineering Faculty, Physiotherapy, MassCom, 36 others bag full NUC accreditation

Following the accreditation exercise by the National Universities Commission, NUC between October/November, 2023 of Nigerian universities, the Vice Chancellor of the University of Calabar, Prof. Florence Banku Obi has received a detailed report from the Commission clearing 35 departments with full accreditation and placing 4 others on interim basis.

In a letter dated June 6th, 2024 and signed by Engr. Abraham Chundusu, the Acting Director of Accreditation on behalf of the Executive Secretary of the Commission, University of Calabar bagged full accreditation for the Faculty of Engineering 5 departments including:
Agricultural Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engincering and Petroleum Engineering. The departments of Mass Communication, Physiotherapy and Music followed suit.

Others are: Estate Management, Environmental Protection and Resource Management, Fine and Applied Arts,
Survey and Geo-informatics, Urban and Regional Planning, Policy and Administrative Studies, Pharmacology, Physiotherapy, Radiography, Architecture, Anatomy, Human Physiology, Educational Administration and Planning, Education English Language, Education Geography, Educational Psychology,
Educational Technology, Elementary Education, Environmental Education, Guidance and Counseling, Home Economics, Mathematics, Microbiology, Science Laboratory Technology
Statistics, Peace and Conflict Studies, Political Science and Social Work bagged full accreditation status respectively which represents over 90% of the total October/November 2023 NUC accreditation exercise.

Those on interim accreditation status includes: Forestry and Wildlife Management, Anatomy, Law and Physics which represents less than 10% of the total accreditation.

Without sounding verbose, this is an incredible feat in the history of the University of Calabar. It’s indeed a testament of the Vice Chancellor’s commitment to changing the University trajectory and repositioning its for academic excellence.

It’s important to note that the National Universities Commission is the overall regulatory body for all Nigerian universities. The Commission is empowered to lay down Minimum Academic Standards for all academic programmes taught in Nigerian Universities and also to accredit such programmes.
