Tensions in Los Angeles escalated on Thursday when US Senator Alex Padilla of California was forcefully removed from a press conference held by Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem.

The incident occurred at the Wilshire Federal Building as Padilla attempted to question Noem over controversial immigration raids rocking the city.

“I’m Senator Alex Padilla. I have questions for the secretary,” Padilla declared before security agents wearing FBI-emblazoned vests forcibly removed and handcuffed him in front of gathered reporters.

Footage filmed by Padilla’s staff captured the dramatic moment before security attempted to block the recording.

The Department of Homeland Security later claimed Padilla had “lunged” at Noem, though video evidence contradicted the assertion. DHS Assistant Secretary Trisha McLaughlin said Secret Service personnel reacted appropriately, believing Padilla posed a threat, though he was unarmed, identified himself, and made no aggressive moves.

The incident drew swift condemnation. California Governor Gavin Newsom called the removal “outrageous, dictatorial, and shameful,” while Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass described it as “absolutely abhorrent.”

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer also demanded a full investigation, labelling the event “despicable” and unbefitting of a democracy.

The confrontation comes amid mounting protests in Los Angeles after aggressive immigration enforcement operations sanctioned by the Trump administration.

The White House has deployed 4,700 federal troops to the city, a move that has drawn sharp criticism from California officials and human rights advocates.

Senator Padilla later spoke to reporters, condemning the federal response and reaffirming his commitment to defend the rights of California residents. “I won’t be silenced for demanding answers on behalf of the people of my state,” Padilla said.

Despite the clash, Secretary Noem confirmed she met privately with Padilla after the press conference for a 15-minute conversation.
