Wini University: Nigeria’s first AI-focused institution to open Lagos
Wini University, Nigeria’s first artificial intelligence-focused institution, is set to open in Epe, Lagos, with a mission to position Africa as a key player in the global AI market.
Inspired by Qatar’s AI university, this project began in 2016 with contributions from Nigerian and Boston-based innovators.
After gaining approval from the National Universities Commission (NUC), the institution is now ready to commence operations.
The university aims to establish a tech ecosystem in Lagos, offering training in advanced fields like blockchain, machine learning, quantum computing, and generative AI.
With the global AI market projected to hit $4.6 trillion by 2040, Wini University seeks to equip students with skills for global competitiveness while transforming Lagos into Africa’s Silicon Valley.
The location in Epe aligns with Lagos State’s vision of becoming the “California of Africa.”
Local traditional leaders have shown strong support, donating ancestral land for the university’s permanent site.
This initiative is expected to shift Epe’s economy from agriculture to a thriving digital economy, creating quality jobs, attracting investments, and fostering innovations like drones, AI climate solutions, and humanoid robots.
Wini University faces challenges, including the need for strong funding, qualified personnel, and an inclusive curriculum.
However, its potential to drive technological growth in Africa and elevate Nigeria’s position in the global tech landscape cannot be overstated.
