Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has shared a remarkable account of his birth, attributing the delay to the influence of witches and wizards.

He revealed that his mother carried his pregnancy for an extended period of 12 months due to these supernatural forces.

Obasanjo made this revelation during a dramatic presentation titled “Aremu Omo Asabi” at the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library in Abeokuta, Ogun State. The event was held in memory of his mother, Bernice Obasanjo, marking 66 years since her passing.

Kehinde Akinyemi, Obasanjo’s media aide, released a statement detailing the former president’s reflections. Obasanjo recounted the immense challenges his mother faced before his birth and credited divine intervention for his eventual arrival.

“My mother carried my pregnancy for 12 months before I was born. It was said that witches and wizards were involved, causing her great suffering,” Obasanjo recounted.

He further disclosed that his mother bore nine children, but only he and his sister survived. Despite these hardships, Obasanjo was the sole child to receive an education, as his father deemed educating a female child unnecessary.

Obasanjo expressed sorrow that his mother did not live to witness his achievements and benefit from the fruits of her labour. In honor of her memory, he pledged his support to the drama troupe’s ambition to set a Guinness World Record for the longest open drama performance.

The drama highlighted the essential role of mothers and the lasting impact of their sacrifices. It called on society to support and honor mothers, ensuring their dreams for their children are fulfilled through access to quality education, healthcare, and opportunities.
