Conference held to mark World Day for Safety and Health at Work in Abuja

The Managing Director of the Nigeria Social Insurance Trust Fund (NSITF), Barrister Seun Faleye, has reiterated the agency’s commitment to prioritising the safety and health of Nigerian workers.

Speaking at a press conference to mark the World Day for Safety and Health at Work on Monday at the Fund’s corporate headquarters in Abuja, Faleye, who was represented by the Executive Director of Finance and Investment, Dr. Adedeji Adegoke, stressed the management’s unwavering dedication to safeguarding the well-being of workers nationwide.

Addressing this year’s theme, “Revolutionising Health and Safety: The Role of AI and Digitalization at Work,” Faleye noted that the world is experiencing a technological renaissance reshaping the modern workplace. He highlighted how artificial intelligence, digital sensors, machine learning and other innovations that were once futuristic now play vital roles in saving lives, protecting dignity, and reducing injuries in workplaces.

He explained that the theme aligns perfectly with NSITF’s strategic focus on accident prevention, employee protection, and enhancing productivity.

Faleye further commended the courage and commitment of Health, Safety and Environment officers, alongside Occupational Safety and Health professionals, recognising them as the first line of defence in workplace safety.

He urged all stakeholders to treat this year’s observance as a turning point by fostering stronger partnerships, adopting better policies, and allocating adequate resources towards workplace safety.

The NSITF boss also called on the media to amplify the message of safety and health across the country.

According to him, “A safe worker is a productive worker, and a healthy workplace leads to a prosperous nation.”

The World Day for Safety and Health at Work, established by the International Labour Organization (ILO) in 2003, aims to raise awareness about preventing workplace accidents, injuries, and illnesses while promoting a strong culture of occupational safety and health.

To mark the occasion, NSITF has lined up a series of week-long activities, including a roadshow in Abuja on Monday, following the press briefing, to enlighten the public on the importance of health and safety at work.
