Security forces neutralize suspected IPOB members in Enugu, recover arms
In a major security operation on Wednesday, law enforcement agents in Enugu State neutralized four suspected members of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its armed militia, the Eastern Security Network (ESN).
The coordinated effort, involving personnel from the Nigerian Army, Police, and the Department of State Services (DSS), took place in Eha Alumona, Nsukka Local Government Area.
The suspects, believed to be plotting attacks on strategic locations, including Enugu metropolis, engaged in an intense gun battle with security operatives.
Four gunmen were neutralized, while others managed to escape into surrounding bush areas, some reportedly sustaining gunshot wounds.
During the confrontation, security forces successfully captured a high-ranking ESN commander, who had been wanted for orchestrating violent activities in the region.
The commander later revealed several hideouts, where operatives discovered a significant stockpile of weapons, ammunition, charms, and other incriminating materials.
While two members of the security forces sustained minor injuries during the gunfight, authorities report that they are in stable condition and receiving medical care.
Governor Peter Mbah’s administration has emphasized a strategic approach to combat insecurity in Enugu. Recent initiatives include the establishment of a Distress Response Squad (DRS), development of a Command and Control Center, and deployment of a surveillance security system to preempt and neutralize threats across the state.
