Equatorial Guinea’s President, Obiang Nguema Mbasogo, has dismissed Baltasar Engonga, the Director General of the National Financial Investigation Agency (ANIF), following a scandal of unprecedented magnitude involving prominent public figures.

Engonga has been replaced by Zenón Obiang Obiang Avomo, according to Ahora EG.

Local reports indicate that Engonga was sacked on November 4, 2024, under Decree number 118/2024, which cited “irregularities committed in the exercise of his functions” and “inappropriate family and social conduct.”

The scandal erupted during a fraud investigation, which led to the discovery of over 400 explicit videos involving Engonga and the wives of several influential individuals in Equatorial Guinea.

Authorities searching his home and office found numerous CDs documenting his encounters, including footage with high-profile figures such as his brother’s wife, the Inspector General of Police’s spouse, the sister of the President, and spouses of about 20 ministers. The recordings, reportedly made with consent, have since leaked, sparking widespread media outcry.

Engonga’s conduct, as exposed in this scandal, has sent shockwaves throughout the nation, marking one of the most significant controversies in the country’s history.
