Amad Diallo’s stunning hat-trick rescues Man United in 3-1 comeback against Southampton
Amad Diallo delivered a breathtaking 12-minute hat-trick to propel Manchester United to a dramatic 3-1 victory over bottom-placed Southampton at Old Trafford on Thursday.
Trailing late into the match, United faced the prospect of a fourth consecutive Premier League home defeat before Diallo’s brilliance transformed the game. The 21-year-old equalized in the 82nd minute, struck again in the 90th, and sealed the win deep into stoppage time.
Southampton had initially taken a deserved lead courtesy of a Manuel Ugarte own goal in the 43rd minute after a well-executed corner. The Saints, determined to avoid the ignominy of becoming the Premier League’s worst-ever side, pressed United with confidence and came close to extending their lead through Kamaldeen Sulemana and Tyler Dibling.
United, however, struggled to impose themselves early, with missed opportunities from Alejandro Garnacho and Antony leaving fans frustrated. Ruben Amorim’s halftime substitutions, including the introduction of Antony and Joshua Zirkzee, signaled his dissatisfaction with his team’s performance.
The breakthrough came when Joshua Zirkzee set up Diallo, whose relentless drive and precision proved too much for Aaron Ramsdale in the Southampton goal. The Ivorian winger’s clinical finishing in the dying moments of the game completed his hat-trick, ensuring a morale-boosting win for Manchester United.
The victory moves United to 12th in the Premier League table, while Southampton remain 10 points adrift from safety, their struggles compounded by this late collapse.
Diallo’s performance not only salvaged the match but also highlighted the immense rebuilding task ahead for Amorim’s United.
