Fire engulfs market in Edo, destroys goods

A devastating fire has destroyed goods valued at hundreds of millions of naira in Jattu-Uzairue, Etsako West Local Government Area of Edo State.

The inferno, which began on Wednesday morning, reportedly originated from a cooking gas explosion in one of the shops located opposite Jattu market along the Auchi-Agenebode road.

Despite efforts by traders and sympathizers to extinguish the flames, the absence of firefighters in the area allowed the fire to spread uncontrollably.

While no lives were lost in the tragic incident, the fire left many shop owners counting heavy losses. Viral footage of the scene showed desperate attempts by traders to salvage their goods amid the blaze.

In response to the tragedy, Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo expressed his sympathies to the affected traders.

Acknowledging the extensive damage to property and livelihoods, he assured victims of the state government’s commitment to providing necessary support to help them recover from the setback.

“Government is working closely with relevant agencies, including Fire Service, State Emergency Management Agency and Local Government Council to assess the extent of the damage and provide immediate relief,” he said.
