A devastating fire outbreak at an Islamiya school in Kaura-Namoda Local Government Area of Zamfara State has claimed the lives of at least 17 Almajiri students, leaving 16 others injured.

Eyewitnesses report that the fire started late Tuesday night and burned for about three hours before it was contained.

According to a resident, Abdulrasaq Bello Kaura, the fire originated from stored sticks, locally called kara, and engulfed the study hall of Makaranta Mallam Ghali, where about 100 students were present.

“It happened inside their study hall. After evacuating the students, they assumed no one was left inside, but when they returned after the fire, they started seeing hands and legs. They got burnt beyond recognition,” he recounted.

The deceased students were buried on Wednesday in accordance with Islamic rites.
