Libya: 28 Migrants found dead near detention facility, 76 rescued
Investigators have uncovered the bodies of 28 migrants in a mass grave near a detention center in southern Libya, raising serious concerns about human trafficking and abuse.
According to a statement from the Libyan Attorney General’s Office on Sunday, the grave was found north of Kufra, a desert city near the Egyptian and Sudanese borders, where dozens of migrants were previously held.
Authorities confirmed that 76 migrants were rescued from the facility, where a criminal gang is believed to have detained them under inhumane conditions. Reports indicate that the migrants were tortured and subjected to cruel, degrading treatment before some were ultimately killed.
Libya has remained highly unstable due to years of civil war, allowing armed groups and human traffickers to operate freely. These groups, some of which are linked to state agencies, engage in forced labor, human trafficking, and exploitation of migrants, refugees, and asylum seekers.
There have been multiple reports of serious human rights abuses, including unlawful killings, forced recruitment, and sexual exploitation.
The latest discovery in Kufra highlights the ongoing dangers faced by migrants traveling through Libya in search of a better life.
