Atiku, Obi mull new political platform ahead of 2027 poll
Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and former Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate Peter Obi are reportedly in advanced discussions to adopt a new political platform ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections.
According to The Africa Report, the two politicians recently held a meeting to deliberate on forming a united front for the next election cycle. Another meeting is scheduled for Saturday, November 30, in Yola, Adamawa State, where Obi will serve as the keynote speaker at an event commemorating Abubakar’s 78th birthday.
Merger Talks in Progress
While details remain undisclosed, a spokesperson confirmed that the option of a merger is being actively considered. This collaboration is seen as a strategic response to the challenges faced by their respective political parties.
PDP Crisis: The party has been embroiled in internal conflicts since the 2023 elections, with its national chairman, Umar Damagum, being a loyalist of FCT Minister Nyesom Wike. Wike has consistently opposed Atiku’s presidential aspirations and openly supported President Bola Tinubu in the last election.
Labour Party Tensions: Similarly, the Labour Party faces its own struggles, with Peter Obi reportedly at odds with the party’s national chairman, Julius Abure.
Strengthening Alliances
The event in Yola, hosted at the American University of Nigeria (AUN), owned by Abubakar, underscores the growing camaraderie between Atiku and Obi. Observers view the occasion as a signal of their commitment to forging a united political front.
Influence of Nasir El-Rufai
Interestingly, former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai is said to be involved in the ongoing talks, potentially adding significant weight to the discussions.
Implications for 2027
With Nigeria’s election season set to commence in 13 months, the reported alliance between Atiku and Obi could reshape the political landscape. The adoption of a new political platform might provide a stronger foundation to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and President Tinubu’s administration.
