BREAKING..(IGP): Court grants Omoyele Sowore ₦10m bail
A Federal High Court has granted bail to former presidential candidate and activist, Omoyele Sowore, in the sum of ₦10 million with one surety.
According to the ruling by Justice Musa Liman, the surety must be a responsible individual with landed property of equal value. The original property documents, along with a passport photograph, must be submitted to the court registrar.
Additionally, Sowore was ordered to deposit his international passport with the court and given 24 hours to meet the bail conditions or risk being remanded in police custody.
The ruling follows arguments from Sowore’s counsel, Marshall Abubakar, and the prosecution counsel, Udey Jonathan, after the court had earlier adjourned its decision on the bail application.
Sowore, who faces 17 counts of cybercrime charges filed by the Nigerian Police, pleaded not guilty. The case is linked to an alleged tweet in which he referred to the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, as the “illegal IGP.” The police claim the statement was false and intended to incite public disorder.
While Sowore’s lawyer requested lenient bail conditions, the prosecution pushed for stricter terms to ensure his presence at trial.
