CAN kicks as Abia Govt imposes tax on churches signpost
The Alex Otti-led government in Abia State has introduced a tax on churches for their signposts, sparking outrage among religious leaders and organizations.
According to reports from SaharaReporters, the new tax policy has raised concerns across the state, with many church leaders voicing their opposition.
The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Abia State Chapter, has expressed strong disapproval of the tax, noting that Abia is the only state in Nigeria currently enforcing such a policy. In a letter signed by CAN Chairman, Rev. Ojo Ojo Uduma, and Secretary, Rev. Dr. Francis E. Okere, the association warned that the move could create the perception that Governor Alex Otti’s administration is “anti-church.”
CAN is urging the government to reconsider the decision, calling on the governor to review and potentially reverse the policy, which has been described as burdensome for religious organizations in the state.
“We passionately plead with your Excellency as a matter of urgency to carefully look into this matter and possibly rescind this policy to avoid compelling the Body of Christ in the State from seeing this regime as being anti-church,” part of the letter read.
The CAN leadership also suggested a roundtable discussion involving the state’s Christian leaders to find an amicable solution to the issue.
