Background

Dave Umahi is a native of Umunaga, Uburu, in the Ohaozara Local Government Area, currently in Ebonyi State, Nigeria.

He was born on July 25th, 1964, into the family of Elder Joseph Umahi Nwaze.

He hails from a family of nine children, two girls and seven boys which included Major-General Obi Abel Umahi (Rtd.), the former chairman of the South-East Security Committee, Ebubeagu, who resigned in May 2021, Roy Umahi Nwaeze, a lawyer, and Austin Umahi Nweze, the former chairman of the People’s Democratic Party’s South East branch.

Education

Dave Umahi had his early education at Umunaga Primary School and his secondary education at Ishiagu High School and the Government Secondary School, Afikpo.

He had a degree in Civil Engineering from Enugu State University of Science and Technology in 1987.

Career

Engr. Dave Umahi co-founded Norman Engineering and Construction Nig. Limited with Dr. Ombo Isokarari, the then-MD of the National Fertilizer Company of Nigeria (NAFCON), Port-Harcourt, following his one-year mandatory National Youth Service Corps (NYSC).

In 1993, he was named General Manager and shareholder.

He also held the positions of Chairman and CEO of Brass Engineering & Construction Nig Ltd, Focus Investment Nig Ltd, and Osborn La Palm Royal Resort Ltd.

He was employed by SCC Nig. Ltd., an Israeli water engineering conglomerate, first as an engineer and then as a project engineer.

Among the other projects he oversaw were the historic Umuahia Water Project and the Ndiegoro Aba Flood Control measures between 1988 and 1990.

Politics

Engineer David Umahi entered public service in 2007 after demonstrating his political prowess during his time in college.

He served as the acting state chairman of the People’s Democratic Party’s Ebonyi State chapter and the cairman of the Federal Medical Center’s governing board in Asaba for a year.

Under the leadership of Governor Martin Elechi, Umahi was appointed Deputy Governor of Ebonyi State in 2011 and served in that capacity until his successful candidacy for governor in 2015.

Umahi won reelection as governor on March 16, 2019, the day of the Ebonyi state governorship election. He received 393,343 votes, more than APC candidate Sonny Ogbuoji’s 81,703 total.

Umahi switched allegiance to the All Progressives Congress in November 2020, and in the Ebonyi South Senatorial District elections of 2022, he was chosen to represent the party as its flagbearer.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu designated him to be the Minister of Works in his cabinet in 2023.
