Nigeria’s music industry is set for a historic night as six of its biggest stars Burna Boy, Davido, Rema, Tems, Yemi Alade, and Asake compete for top honours at the 67th Grammy Awards.

The prestigious event will take place this Sunday at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles.

These artists have secured nominations in major categories, including Best African Music Performance, Best Global Music Album, and Best R&B Song. Tems leads the Nigerian pack with three nominations, while Burna Boy makes history as the first African artist to be nominated for six consecutive years.

Burna Boy, Tems, and Davido Eye Grammy Wins

Burna Boy, who won his first Grammy in 2021, is a strong contender once again. His track “Higher” from his album I Told Them has been nominated for Best African Music Performance. To clinch the award, he will have to edge out Yemi Alade, Asake, Tems, and Chris Brown’s collaboration with Davido and Lojay.

Tems is also poised for a big night, with three nominations, including Best African Music Performance for Love Me Jeje and Best Global Music Album for Born in the Wild. She is also in the running for Best R&B Song with Burning. Having already won a Grammy for her contribution to Future’s Wait for U, she stands a strong chance of adding another golden trophy to her collection.

Yemi Alade, Rema, and Asake are making their Grammy debut, and while the competition is fierce, their nominations signal their growing influence on the global stage. Yemi Alade’s “Tomorrow”, nominated for Best African Music Performance, cements her status as a pioneer in Afrobeat. Rema, nominated for Best Global Music Album with HEIS, could achieve a career-defining moment with a win. Meanwhile, Asake’s “MMS” featuring Wizkid has also positioned him as a formidable talent.

Legendary Beninese-French singer Angélique Kidjo is also in the mix, competing in the Best Global Music Performance category with her track Sunlight to My Soul, featuring the Soweto Choir. She will have to outshine Ghana’s reggae and Afro-Roots artist Rocky Dawuni to claim another Grammy.

Star-Studded Grammy Night Awaits

The 2025 Grammys will be hosted by Trevor Noah, who will also serve as a producer for the show. However, this year’s event will also double as a fundraiser for wildfire relief efforts in Los Angeles, with the Recording Academy and MusiCares pledging $3.2 million in emergency aid.

A stellar lineup of Grammy-nominated artists will perform on the main stage, including Shakira, Billie Eilish, Charli XCX, Benson Boone, RAYE, and Sabrina Carpenter. Additionally, icons like Stevie Wonder, Cynthia Erivo, John Legend, and Coldplay’s Chris Martin will join the show.

Ahead of the main event, the Grammy Awards Premiere Ceremony will stream live on YouTube at 12:30 p.m. PT, featuring performances from Yolanda Adams, Wayne Brady, Angelique Kidjo, Taj Mahal, and Deborah Cox, among others.

Beyoncé Makes Grammy History Again

Meanwhile, pop sensation Beyoncé is set to make history as the most-nominated female artist in a single year, leading the pack with 11 nominations, including Best Country Album for Cowboy Carter. Other top contenders include Charli XCX, Billie Eilish, Kendrick Lamar, and Post Malone, each securing multiple nominations.

With an intense battle ahead, Nigerian fans eagerly await to see if their music superstars will bring home the coveted Grammy trophies.
