Eight things to know about Dr. Isiak Kayode Opeifa, new MD of NRC

Dr. Isiak Kayode Opeifa has been appointed the Managing Director of the Nigeria Railway Corporation (NRC) by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

1. Early life

Dr. Kayode Opeifa was born on May 21, 1965, in Nigeria. His early years were shaped by a passion for learning and problem-solving, traits that have defined his illustrious career.

2. Academic background

Opeifa earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Biochemistry from the University of Ilorin.

He further pursued advanced studies, obtaining a Master’s degree and a Ph.D., showcasing his dedication to academic excellence.

3. Career in academia

At the age of 29, he became a senate member at Lagos State University (LASU), Ojo, where he began his professional journey as a lecturer.

4. Transition to public service

In 2007, he was appointed Special Adviser on Transportation by then-Governor Babatunde Fashola of Lagos State. This marked the beginning of his impactful career in public administration.

During his tenure as Special Adviser, Dr. Opeifa introduced significant reforms to the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), improving traffic regulation and public transport in Lagos.

6. Commissioner for transportation

In 2011, he was elevated to Commissioner for Transportation in Lagos State. He implemented policies that eased traffic congestion and enhanced mobility in one of Africa’s busiest cities.

In September 2017, he was appointed Transport Secretary for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja. There, he focused on improving urban mobility in Nigeria’s capital.

7. Achievements

In 2019, Opeifa served as Vice Chairman and Team Leader of the Presidential Committee on Apapa Port Congestion, addressing one of Lagos’ most challenging transportation issues.

8. Latest appointment

On Wednesday January 22, 2025, Dr. Opeifa was appointed Managing Director of the Nigeria Railway Corporation (NRC) by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
