The Falconets of Nigeria have been eliminated from the ongoing FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup in Colombia after a 2-1 defeat to Japan.

Despite a late goal by Olushola Sobowale, assisted by a precise cross from Goodness Osigwe, Nigeria couldn’t overcome the two-goal advantage secured by Japan.

Japan took the lead in the 33rd minute, with Miyu Matsunaga converting a pass from Rihona Ujihara in a first half that offered few chances for the Falconets.

Nigeria struggled to change the tempo of the game in the second half, allowing Japan to dominate play. Maya Hijjikati added a second goal for Japan in the 63rd minute, sealing the victory and ensuring Nigeria’s exit from the tournament.

However, Nigeria tried to add a second to take the match into extra time, it was already late as Japan ran off winners.

It’s another devastating end to a campaign for the Falconets who have not gone past this round since they lost in the finals to Germany in 2014.
