The Federal Ministry of Education, along with the National Board for Technical Education and various stakeholders, has expressed support for establishing a National Polytechnic Commission to enhance academic standards in Nigeria’s education sector.

During a public hearing organized by the House of Representatives Committee on Federal Polytechnics and Higher Technical Education in Abuja, Sani Gwarzo, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Education, emphasized that the commission’s creation is long overdue. He highlighted the need for proper regulation of the polytechnic sector, ensuring alignment with international standards.

Gwarzo assured that the Ministry is committed to supporting efforts to establish a commission that upholds educational standards. He also pledged assistance to expedite the bill’s passage and the commission’s establishment.

Speaker of the House, Rep. Abbas Tajudeen, stated that the National Polytechnic Commission would act as a regulatory body to maintain standards across polytechnics nationwide. He explained that the initiative aims to enhance education quality, promote uniformity and excellence within the polytechnic system, and ensure that graduates are well-prepared to meet industry demands and contribute to the economy.

Abbas also mentioned the creation of the Federal Vocational and Entrepreneurship Institute in Lagos State, which will provide training opportunities for aspiring entrepreneurs and skilled workers. This institute is envisioned to equip individuals with technical skills and entrepreneurial knowledge, fostering innovation and economic growth.

In his speech, Abbas emphasized the importance of equipping youth with relevant skills and knowledge in a competitive global environment. The proposed agency and institutions are intended to serve as centers of excellence, providing quality education that meets international standards while addressing local needs.
