‘I deserved nomination’ – Rodrygo speaks up on Balon d’Or exclusion

Real Madrid winger Rodrygo has shared his frustration after being excluded from the 30-man shortlist for the prestigious Ballon d’Or award.

The 23-year-old Brazilian was notably left off the list, which was compiled by France Football’s editorial team, Ballon d’Or Ambassador Didier Drogba, and a panel of sports journalists.

Rodrygo expressed his disappointment over the omission despite his impressive performances.

In an interview with ESPN, Rodrygo said, “I was upset; I think I deserved it.”

“I don’t want to belittle the players who are there; I think they deserved it also. But I think I had a place in the 30.”

Rodrygo speculated that his versatility across various attacking positions might have contributed to his omission.

“Often, I’m just filling spaces,” he said. “Is someone missing there? Put Rodrygo in. Is someone missing on the right? Rodrygo. Is someone missing as number nine? Rodrygo. That’s it.

“It may get in my way a little, but I’m a team player.”

Unlike Rodrygo, teammates such as Vinicius Junior, Jude Bellingham, Dani Carvajal, Frederick Valverde, Antonio Rudiger, and even the now-retired Toni Kroos were all nominated.

The winner of the grand prize shall be determined and announced on the 28th of October.

Last season, Rodrygo played a key role in helping Real Madrid secure both the UEFA Champions League and Spanish La Liga titles, scoring 17 goals and providing 9 assists in 51 appearances.
