Joining Chelsea was not God’s plan for me – Samu Omorodion

Porto striker Samu Omorodion, who was on the brink of joining Chelsea during the summer transfer window, believes that external forces, including divine intervention, played a role in preventing the move to Stamford Bridge. 

The 20-year-old forward was set to complete a £34 million transfer from Atletico Madrid, but the deal fell through due to concerns over an ankle injury.

Instead, Omorodion made a successful switch to Portuguese giants FC Porto, where he has thrived, netting seven goals in his first seven games, including a standout performance in a 3-3 draw against Manchester United.

Reflecting on the failed Chelsea transfer, the Spain Under-21 international expressed his belief that the outcome was meant to be, highlighting his faith in a higher plan for his career path.

“I had a very difficult summer. We had a really bad time because in the end everyone knows that I was close to signing, but it’s true that if it didn’t happen, it was for a reason, because God didn’t want it,” Samu Omorodion told Spanish outlet RTVE.

He expressed gratitude to Porto for offering him an opportunity during a challenging period.

“I’m also very grateful to Porto for giving me the opportunity when things looked at their worst, and I’m very happy with where I am now. I’ve left the past behind and now I’m focused on what’s coming to me,“ he added.

Standing 6ft 4ins tall, Omorodion, born to Nigerian parents, moved to Seville from Melilla at a young age.

He developed his skills with Sevilla and Nervion at the youth level before joining Granada in 2021, making his debut for their reserve team in March 2022 at the age of 17.
