JUST-IN: Edo Election Tribunal relocates to Abuja
The Edo State Governorship Election Petitions Tribunal, led by Justice Wilfred Kpochi, has announced its relocation to Abuja.
This decision comes after a high-profile hearing in Benin City, where a PDP Data Analyst and Expert witness presented substantial evidence alleging massive rigging in favor of the APC during the September 21 governorship election.
During the session, the expert witness adopted written statements and provided extensive evidence, sparking objections and visible tension among counsels for the respondents.
The respondents’ legal teams requested an adjournment, citing unpreparedness for cross-examination. The Tribunal granted the request in the interest of fair hearing, marking the final sitting in Benin City.
The Tribunal Secretary, Muazu Bagudu, confirmed the move, attributing it to security concerns and undue pressure from political stakeholders in Edo State.
Reports suggest that notable APC chieftains in the state had issued threats to disrupt proceedings, prompting the Tribunal to prioritize neutrality and safety by relocating to Abuja.
This development follows public remarks by APC State Chairman Jarret Tenebe, who, during a recent TV interview, threatened to arrest PDP witnesses scheduled to testify against Governor Monday Okpebholo and the APC.
The Tribunal will resume sitting in Abuja on Tuesday, January 28, 2025, where proceedings are expected to continue under heightened security and impartial conditions.
