‘Man about the house’ star, Brian Murphy passes away at 92
Renowned English actor Brian Murphy, best known for his role in the classic TV sitcom ‘Man About The House’ (1973–1976), has passed away at the age of 92.
His wife, Linda Regan, announced his demise on X (formerly Twitter) with a heartfelt tribute, sharing a cherished photo of them together. “My love for you will never die. RIP Sweetheart,” she wrote.
Murphy died at his home in Kent, England, on Sunday. His agent, Thomas Bowington, also paid tribute on Instagram, marking the loss of a beloved figure in British television history.
He described Murphy as a “sprinkler of joy” on and off stage who will be deeply missed. He also revealed that the actor featured in his last television series in November and December 2024.
“Our client, Brian Murphy has died at the age of 92. Brian filmed his last television series back in November and December last year,” the post reads.
“A sprinkler of joy on as well as off stage! A truly great actor and man! Greatly missed!”
Born on the Isle of Wight in 1932, Murphy began his career in the 1950s as a member of the pioneering Theatre Workshop.
He then worked closely with theatre director Joan Littlewood throughout his early career.
In 1973, he became prominent for his role as landlord George Roper in ITV’s ‘Man About The House’.
The show, however, was considered controversial for the time because it featured two single women living with a man.
When the show ended in 1976, Murphy starred in the spin-off ‘George And Mildred’ which ran for five series until 1979.
Murphy’s acting career spanned almost five decades, with features in over 100 films, comedy dramas, and television series.
The actor met his wife Regan in 1990 and they married in 1995.
Murphy is survived by Regan and his two children, Trevor and Kevin. The children are from his previous marriage to Carol Gibson.
