Recism: Mallorca fan bags jail term for abusing Chukwueze, Vinicius Jnr
A Mallorca fan was sentenced to a year in prison and handed a three-year stadium ban for racially abusing Real Madrid’s Vinicius Junior and former Villarreal player Samuel Chukwueze.
The abuse occurred during two separate La Liga matches in February 2023.
The fan was convicted of two crimes against moral integrity, aggravated by racist motives, as confirmed by Real Madrid.
Despite the prison sentence, it was suspended after the fan issued an apology to Vinicius and completed an anti-discrimination program.
This is the third conviction related to racist insults towards Vinicius in recent months, following incidents that have sparked international outrage and highlighted ongoing issues of racism in Spanish football.
Additionally, a minor who racially abused Aurelien Tchouameni has also been banned from stadiums for a year.
“(He has) apologised and shown remorse for his conduct, and he has agreed to complete socio-educational activities in the jurisdiction of minors as proposed by prosecutors,” added Madrid.
Earlier in September, Vinicius called for Spain to be stripped of its 2030 World Cup hosting duties unless it makes progress on the issue of racism in stadiums.
On Sunday, Real Madrid visit Atletico Madrid in a derby clash at the Metropolitano stadium, where Vinicius has been the victim of racial abuse on several occasions.
