Security: Rivers Govt donates Helicopter to Nigerian Air Force

The Rivers State Government has donated an Agusta Westland (AW) 139 helicopter to the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) to enhance security operations in the Niger Delta region and protect critical national assets.
Speaking at the handover ceremony on March 5, 2025, at NAF Base, Port Harcourt, Governor Siminalayi Fubara emphasized that the donation aligns with his administration’s efforts to support the Federal Government’s security initiatives.
He noted that the NAF has played a vital role in combating security threats, particularly illegal oil bunkering, contributing to increased crude oil production and economic stability.
> “Nigeria has witnessed an increase in crude oil output, reflecting the effectiveness of ongoing combined efforts of the Nigerian security agencies in protecting the nation’s critical infrastructure,” Governor Fubara stated.
In response, the Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Hasan Abubakar, expressed gratitude for the long-standing partnership between the NAF and Rivers State, dating back to the Nigerian Civil War.
He highlighted the state’s continuous support, including infrastructure upgrades and the recent runway rehabilitation at NAF Base, Port Harcourt.
The AW139 helicopter, equipped with advanced avionics and high-speed capabilities, will enhance the Air Force’s ability to carry out rapid response missions. Training programs for pilots, engineers, and technicians have already commenced to ensure effective deployment and maintenance of the aircraft.
Air Marshal Abubakar also praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his commitment to modernizing the Air Force, citing fleet expansion and infrastructure upgrades as key improvements to NAF’s operational readiness.
He further disclosed that the NAF is prioritizing the deployment of T-129 ATAK attack helicopters for combat operations against illegal oil bunkering and crude oil theft. Additionally, Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) and other surveillance and strike platforms have been deployed to strengthen security in the region.
The CAS assured Nigerians that the NAF remains committed to collaborating with other security agencies to combat criminal activities and ensure a safe and thriving economic environment in Rivers State and across Nigeria.
