State of Emergency in Rivers: Heated arguments erupts among lawmakers before plenary (Video)

The House of Representatives witnessed a heated argument on Wednesday morning as lawmakers clashed over President Bola Tinubu’s declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State.
Before the start of plenary, lawmakers were seen in fierce discussions, with some supporting the move while others condemned it as unconstitutional.
Sources within the House revealed that members of the opposition parties, particularly the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), strongly criticized the suspension of Governor Siminalayi Fubara, his deputy, and state lawmakers. They argued that the president lacked the constitutional authority to remove an elected governor, warning that the decision could set a dangerous precedent.
However, pro-Tinubu lawmakers defended the emergency declaration, stating that it was necessary to restore order and prevent further escalation of the political crisis between the governor and lawmakers loyal to Federal Capital Territory Minister, Nyesom Wike.
“The president acted in the best interest of Nigeria. The crisis in Rivers had reached a dangerous level, and urgent intervention was needed,” a ruling party lawmaker stated.
Despite efforts to calm the situation, tensions remained high, with lawmakers exchanging heated words before the Speaker, Tajudeen Abbas, called the House to order for official proceedings.
The debate over the legality of Tinubu’s decision is expected to dominate discussions in the coming days, as opposition leaders and legal experts have vowed to challenge the move in court.
