The Super Falcons’ dreams of Olympic glory have been shattered, as they suffered a 3-1 defeat to Japan in their final Group C match at the Paris 2024 Olympics.

This loss marks the end of their journey in the women’s football event, leaving fans and players alike heartbroken.

Having lost their previous games to Brazil and Spain, Nigeria entered the match against Japan with a slim chance of making it to the quarter-finals. However, Japan quickly extinguished those hopes with a dominant performance.

Japan struck first in the 22nd minute through Hamano Maika, followed by a superb free-kick from Tanako Maina that beat Nigerian goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie in the 32nd minute.

Despite a goal from Jennifer Echegini in the 42nd minute, which gave Nigeria a glimmer of hope, Japan sealed their victory with Kitagawa Hakaru’s goal in added time.

The second half saw the Super Falcons pushing for a comeback, but Japan’s defense held strong. Despite creating chances, Nigeria couldn’t convert, and Japan also missed opportunities to extend their lead.

This marks Nigeria’s first appearance in the women’s football event at the Olympics in 16 years, ending in a group stage exit with no points, five goals conceded, and just one goal scored.

In the other Group C match, Spain defeated Brazil 2-0 to top the group, with Japan finishing second and Brazil third. Nigeria finished last in the group, marking a disappointing end to their Olympic campaign.
