Tragedy struck on Thursday along Warrake Road in Owan East Local Government Area of Edo State when the campaign convoy of Senator Monday Okpebholo, the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate for the September 21 governorship election, was involved in a fatal collision with a Toyota Camry.

The crash resulted in the deaths of five occupants of the car.

The accident occurred near the Uzebba axis of Owan West Local Government Area. The victims, including the driver, Emmanuel Edionwe, died on the spot, while another occupant was rushed to Irrua Specialist Hospital in critical condition.

Witnesses reported that the campaign convoy was speeding when one of its vehicles veered into the Camry, which was negotiating a bend. The victims were returning from a funeral ceremony when the crash occurred, leaving the families of the deceased in devastation.

The remains of the deceased have been taken to the Edo State University Mortuary in Etsako West, while the lone survivor continues to receive care at the hospital.

Although Senator Okpebholo visited the hospital, the APC campaign council has yet to issue a formal statement or offer condolences to the families of the deceased. Neither the police nor the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) have provided updates on the accident investigation.
